Interactive Learning Suite

Interactive Learning Suite

The goal of this project was to evaluate existing interactive training developed with Macromedia Authorware 6 and create a Flash based templated solution offering the same or similar functionality. The training designers would use the template to create new training and migrate the existing training to the new platform.

Authorware… heh… this was back when Macromedia (now Adobe) was going to sunset the product. The Authorware-based training courses were mostly a series of images, text and audio interspersed with short interactive tasks that more or less simulated aircraft panels. Students were expected to follow the training and successfully complete the interactions for their grade.

The tools I wrote went through a couple of versions, starting with Flash MX and ActionScript 1.0 and later being revised and improved with the new capabilities available in Flash MX2004 and ActionScript 2.0. The templates were designed so that every page of the training was represented by its own swf file. The individual pages were displayed like slides in a main player which displayed the text and audio. The order of the pages was determined by an xml file. Audio and text were defined in a separate script file — a hold over from the old Authorware training. Interactions were created by linking the movieclip assets on stage to a series of configurable interaction controls that determined how the linked stage assets would respond to user actions.

Oh, don’t look at me if you don’t like how the navigation looks — the design had already been determined (by committee) before I was hired.
